KANATA SOUTH WARD FORUM TO DISCUSS SNOW PLOUGHING

After the heavy snowfall in December, I heard a number of concerns about snow ploughing. To give people a chance to provide comments directly to city staff, the next Kanata South Ward Forum will be dealing with snow ploughing and ice control.

There will be a brief presentation from city staff followed by a chance to ask questions or make comments.

The Ward Forum will be:

Wednesday, January 30
7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Lion Dick Brûlé Community Centre, 170 Castlefrank Road,

LICENSING COMMITTEE TO HOLD HEARING ON BUSINESS LICENSE FOR TONY’S SNOWBLOWING SERVICE

On January 21 the city’s Licensing Committee will be holding a hearing on whether to permanently revoke the license of Tony’s Snowblowing Service. The license was suspended on December 21. Members of the public can provide input to the Licensing Committee. To get information on how to do so, you can contact the co-ordinator, Rosemary Nelson at 613-580-2424 ext. 21624 or Rosemary.Nelson@ottawa.ca.

The city’s ability to regulate snow ploughing contractors or other businesses is limited by what is in provincial legislation. This means that, even though a business is licensed by the city, it is still important to check with the Better Business Bureau before signing a contract for a service like snow ploughing. The Better Business Bureau can be contacted by going to www.ottawa.bbb.org or by calling 613-237-4856.

NEXT COFFEE WITH PEGGY JANUARY 25

The next Coffee with Peggy will be Friday, January 25 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Hazeldean Mall Food Court. It is a chance for to chat with me informally about issues facing our community.

4TH KANATA BEAVERS RECOGNIZED FOR WORK ON SPRING CLEANING THE CAPITAL

Last week the 4th Kanata Beaver Colony were recognized for their participation in Fall Cleaning the Capital. The members of the Beavers cleaned up Hayward Park. Congratulations to members and organizers of the 4th Kanata Beaver Colony as well as the hundreds of other Kanata South residents who make Fall Cleaning the Capital and Spring Cleaning the Capital a success.

SNOWBANKS INCREASE PARKING CHALLENGE

One of the realities of living in Ottawa is that in years when snowfall is high, snow banks will take up some space on the road. This means that on streets where it might be possible for cars to park on both sides of the street in the summer may not be wide enough to allow for this in the winter. When parking at this time of year we need to ensure there is enough space for emergency vehicles, like fire trucks and paramedic vehicles.

VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTERS PLAY ROLE IN COMMUNITY

In addition to their duties maintaining fire safety, volunteer firefighters, like professional firefighters have a long history of helping out with community events. The list of events where the volunteer firefighters at Station 42 in Kanata help out covers both the urban and rural parts of our community and represents many hours of work by some very dedicated people.
