ORGANICS PROGRAM MEANS GARBAGE THAT SMELLS GOING IN THE GREEN BIN
When the City’s organics or compost plus program starts, garbage that smells will be going in the green bin. Whether it is meat or vegetable scraps, kitty litter, or paper and cardboard that has been used to wrap food, it can be put in the green bin.
Waste in green bins will be picked up once a week during spring, summer and fall. During winter months when there are fewer issues with odour and wild animals pick-up will be every two weeks. With the number of items that will be going into the green bin, there will be a lot less going in the garbage. There will also not be the odour problems with garbage. This is why reducing the frequency of garbage – not green bin – pickup is being discussed.
As you will have heard the organics program will allow us to extend the life of the Trail Road Landfill. Every three years of the green bin program extends the life of the Trail Road Landfill by one year.
TRANSPORTATION MASTER PLAN CONSULTATION
The Transportation Master Plan is what determines where light rail, new transitways or new or widened roads should go. It is currently being reviewed. To enable Kanata residents to provide input, an Open House is being held on Thursday, September 18 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Glen Cairn Community Centre at 186 Morena Road.
People can just stop by or participate in “table discussions.” To participate in the table discussions people should register in advance.
There are also consultations in other parts of the City and a chance to provide feedback on line. For details or to register go to http://ottawa.ca/residents/public_consult/beyond_2020/tmp/involved_en.html.
POLICE TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT FOCUSES ON SCHOOL ZONES AND STOP SIGNS IN SEPTEMBER
In September the Ottawa Police will be focusing on motorists ignoring school bus traffic controls and running stop signs. The goal is to help children get to school safely whether they are walking or taking the bus.
In 2007, there were 1,666 collisions reported at intersections with stop signs. Eight people were killed and 588 were injured.
Over the last five years there have been 43 collisions with school buses, eighteen of which involved injuries.
Penalties for passing a stopped school bus with its upper red lights flashing are heavy. They include fines ranging from $400 to $2,000 and six demerit points for a first
offence. For a second offence, the driver faces a fine between $1,000 and $4,000, six demerit points and a possible jail sentence of up to six months. It is also possible for car owners to be charged and fined between $400 and $2,000.
OPEN HOUSE ON NEW POLICE STATION SEPTEMBER 17
The Ottawa Police Service will be holding an Open House on plans for the new police station serving Kanata on September 17. It is a chance to get more information about the plans and provide comment. The Open House will run from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and will be in the Upper Hall of the Kanata Recreation Complex at 100 Walter Baker Place.
