KANATA SOUTH ISSUES GOING TO AUGUST 18 PLANNING MEETING

At its August 18 meeting, the Council’s Planning and Environment Committee will be discussing three rezoning proposals that will affect Kanata South residents.

Proposals to change the zoning at 74 and 310 Stonehaven will be coming back after being deferred at the June meeting. The rezoning application for 310 Stonehaven would lift the holding zone to permit development to take place. The proposal for 74 Stonehaven changes the types of housing that can be built. With traffic problems in Bridlewood, new development is a problem.

A rezoning proposal to allow a hotel to be built at 160 Hearst Way will also be discussed.
On Hearst Way the concerns are loss of employment lands and traffic in the evening and on weekends.

In all three cases, I am working to find ways to reduce the impact that will withstand an OMB appeal.

People can provide input on issues coming before Committee in person or in writing. The committee meeting will be at 9:30 a.m. on Monday August 18 in the Champlain Room at Ottawa City Hall. You can arrange to speak by e-mailing Robert Tremblay, the committee co-ordinator, at Rob.Tremblay@ottawa.ca or phoning him at 613-580-2424  ext. 28828. If you are unable to be at the committee, you can e-mail comments to Robert Tremblay with a request that they be circulated to the committee.

POLICE AND BY-LAW CONTINUING SWEEPS OF PARKS

Both the Police and By-Law Services are continuing to do sweeps of parks to crack down on problem areas. One difference  in the last couple of years s that charges are more likely to be laid and tickets are more likely to be handed out. One of the reasons is to ensure that parents of anyone under-age who is causing problems find out.

COLLISIONS BETWEEN DEER AND CARS DROP FOR SECOND YEAR RUNNING

In the fall of 2007, for the second year in a row, the number of collisions between deer and cars in Ottawa dropped. However, even with the drop the number of collisions is still high.

October and November are the peak period for collisions between deer and cars. In 2007 there were 236 collisions. This is down from 298 in 2006 and an average of 344 per year between 2003 and 2005.

What is making a difference is that people are slowing down and giving themselves the extra time they need to avoid hitting deer.

In Kanata, because we have to travel through the Greenbelt frequently, collisions with deer are a particular concern. We know we have to keep an eye out for deer and make sure we are going slowly enough to safely avoid a collision. This is particularly true as it starts to get dark earlier.
