PARKING SPACE REQUIREMENTS ARE YEAR ROUND

Winter is gone but memories of parking problems on some streets because parking spaces at nearby stores or offices were covered by snow banks have not quite disappeared. During the last winter a number of residents contacted me about problems with people having to park on residential streets that were already narrower than usual, because spaces at a nearby office or store were blocked.

Under zoning by-laws, there are minimum parking requirements for stores and business. To keep problems for nearby residents to a minimum, commercial properties must have the required number of parking spaces throughout the year. In the winter, this means businesses may need to haul snow away instead of allowing a large number of their parking spaces to be blocked by snow banks.

A TASTE FOR LIFE COMES TO KANATA

For the last 10 years Taste for Life has been a chance for people to raise funds to help men, women and children living with HIV/AIDS, spend time with friends and eat great food. This year A Taste for Life will be on Wednesday April 23.

In Kanata, The Glen Scottish Restaurant on Hazeldean Road will be participating.

Just by dining at The Glen or any other participating restaurant on that evening, the restaurant will donate 25% of the cost of our meals to Bruce House and the Snowy Owl AIDS Foundation. There is also the opportunity for diners to donate additionally for which charitable receipts will be provided.

I am looking forward to being able to participate in A Taste for Life in Kanata and would like to thank the owners of The Glen for participating in this event.

There are in total 44 restaurants participating this year.  I encourage you to have a look at the website at www.atasteforlife.org to find out more about this initiative that originated in Ontario and is now taking place in over 15 cities across Ontario.  If you decide to participate and go with your own group, make sure to call to make a reservation, as this is a very popular event!

OPEN HOUSE ON SOUTH MARCH HIGHLANDS NATURAL AREA

One of the most environmentally significant areas in our city is the South March Highlands in Kanata. Much of the environmentally significant land is owned by the City so the entire community can continue to enjoy it. A plan to balance recreational uses with the need to protect what makes the area environmentally significant is being prepared.

To give people a chance to provide input an Open House is being held on Wednesday April 30 between 7:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. at the Old Town Hall at March Road and Klondike Road.
