WARD FORUM TO DISCUSS TRANSIT TASK FORCE

At the Kanata South Ward Forum on June 20 there will be information on the report from the Mayor’s Transit Task Force. It will be a chance for people to raise questions and provide input.

The Kanata South Ward Forum will be:
Wednesday, June 20
7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Second Floor, Kanata Recreation Comlex, 100 Walter Baker Place

As with all ward forums, everyone is welcome.

COST BIG QUESTION FROM TRANSIT TASK FORCE

The report of the Mayor’s Transit Task Force will help get the discussion of how we address transportation challenges in our city going again. What it is not, is a detailed blueprint.

Members of the Mayor’s Transit Task Force were up front about the fact they did not have the resources or the expertise to provide a detailed costing of their ideas. While the report makes recommendations on routes and technology, many of the things that will affect the cost, such as the frequency of service, were not addressed.

In Kanata, we also have to look at whether the proposals meet our needs. The recommendation to complete the Western Transitway and convert it to light rail addresses many of the concerns I have heard from residents over the last few years. Where there may be debate is that the Transit Task Force suggests this happen in the long term. In the short term, rail service to Kanata would be a line that would go from Kanata North southeast to Heron and Riverside and then northeast to Bayview.

There is also concern about using the Trans Canada Trail corridor for rail service. Unless we close down the Trans Canada Trail, using that corridor will require a good deal of work to accommodate both the trail and a railway line. The cost of that work could well eliminate any of the savings on construction costs that using rail corridors for light rail are supposed to bring.

I have added information on the recommendations of Mayor’s Transit Task Force for Kanata to my website. View in more detail what the recommendations mean for Kanata by clicking Here...

JUNE 23 IS GIVEAWAY DAY

On Saturday, June 23, the City of Ottawa is holding a “Giveaway Day.” People can put unwanted household goods at the curb for other City residents to pick up for free. The intent of the program is to help residents reuse household items that otherwise might end up in local landfills.

Details can be found at:

http://www.ottawa.ca/city_services/recycling_garbage/giveaway/index_en.html.

Thanks are due to Councillors Marianne Wilkinson and Steve Desroches for their work on this issue.
