LANDFILLS VS. INCINERATION: GET THE FACTS
March 27, 2006

On April 3rd, I am holding a forum on incineration. This responds to some of the questions that have come up with the proposal to expand the Carp Road Landfill.

It will be at A. Y. Jackson Secondary School on Monday, April 3rd from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.. Space limitations mean only the first 200 people to arrive can be admitted.

Representatives from the Swedish Embassy will be discussing how incineration works there and the company that operates the incinerator in Brampton will also be making a presentation. There will be an opportunity for people to ask questions.

BRIDLEWOOD CORE PARK – ARE IMPROVEMENTS NEEDED?

Proposals have been made to improve the facilities in the Bridlewood Core Park. To give people a chance to provide input on changes to the park, an Open House is being held. It will be:

Wednesday, April 5th
6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Eva James Community Centre in the foyer

Specific issues include provision of outdoor seasonal toilets for sports fields, provision of concrete storage units and replacement or relocation of the play structure that has been vandalized at least twice. I have also asked staff to be prepared to answer questions about other recreation issues affecting Bridlewood.

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP AND KANATA’S APPEARANCE

One of the reasons I decided to run for council was my concern about the appearance of our community. Many of you have contacted me about Kanata’s appearance and I made very sure that senior city staff were aware people were not happy.

Last fall, council asked staff to look into a Community Partnership Program to address concerns about our city’s appearance. The idea is that the city will match community funding for work to improve the appearance of our communities.

A detailed proposal for a pilot program has not come forward.

Under the pilot program non-profit groups can apply for matching funds for projects to improve the look of our community on city property, hydro corridors or federal and provincial property. The types of proposals that will be considered include:

• Maintenance of gateway features
• Commemoration of the historical and natural significance of a site
• Floral displays
• Innovative green space or gardens
• Measures to enhance native species or control invasive species
• Maintaining and restoring city-owned urban natural areas

FIRST STEPS IN EAGLESON ROAD WIDENING

The open house on widening Eagleson Road between Cope/Cadence and Hope Side Road is another step towards dealing with traffic problems in South Kanata. With the growth in Bridlewood and the completion of Bridgestone, traffic is a concern. If you would like to have information or have input, there will be an Open House on the environmental assessment – which is required by provincial legislation – on Tuesday April 4th from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Kanata Recreation Complex.
