BRIDLEWOOD DEVELOPMENT UPDATE

Planning and Environment Committee is scheduled to consider two proposals that will affect Bridlewood on August 22nd. Both are for properties located in the lands on the west side of Eagleson.

To look at the proposals you can go to
www.feltmateforkanata.com/pages/events/August_2006.htm and click on the “Agenda” link beside the August 22nd Planning and Environment Committee. The report will be released after August 15th. If you have comments on the proposals, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

NEW DEVELOPMENT PROPOSED IN KANATA’S “DOWNTOWN”

On September 12, the City’s Planning and Environment Committee is scheduled to consider a development proposal for what was supposed to be Kanata’s downtown.

Prior to amalgamation, plans drawn up by the former City of Kanata for the area between the Queensway and Campeau envisaged the area developing as Kanata’s downtown. Part of the plan approved by the former City of Kanata is for a development that is different what exists elsewhere in our community.

The eventual goal for the Town Centre is roughly 10,000 jobs. For the area bounded by the Queensway, Kanata Avenue, Campeau Drive and the pathway between the pedestrian overpass and Campeau, between 1,000 and 1,500 housing units are expected. Based on the former City of Kanata plan, maximum building heights were expected to be between eight and 10 storeys.

In the City of Ottawa’s Official Plan process in 2003, the former City of Kanata plan for the Town Centre became part of the City of Ottawa Official Plan. A complete copy can be found at: http://ottawa.ca/city_services/planningzoning/2020/op/vol_2b/kanata/index_en.shtml. If you would like a copy and have trouble accessing the site, please contact me and I will be happy to send you a copy.

What will be discussed on September 12 is a proposal for rezoning the eastern half of the land between the Queensway, Kanata Avenue, Campeau Drive and the pathway between the pedestrian overpass and Campeau to allow development. The zoning proposed is intended to allow high density residential, offices, commercial and parks to be built.

Because of the plan adopted by the former City of Kanata, development that occurs in the Town Centre will be higher density than has occurred in other parts of Kanata.

What is a concern is how the development will impact on nearby residents and whether the plans meet the vision we were promised when the former City of Kanata drew up plans for the Town Centre. The Open House gave people a chance to see the plans and provide feedback. I would like to thank everyone who has provided comments.

The report on the proposed rezoning will be posted on the City’s website after September 5th as part of the Planning and Environment Committee agenda. To look at the proposals you can go to www.feltmateforkanata.com/calendar and click on the “Agenda” link beside the September 12th Planning and Environment Committee.

When the report is released we will have a chance to see whether the concerns of Kanata residents have been addressed. If your concerns are not addressed, it is worth arranging to appear before the Planning and Environment Committee. It would also help me if you provided any comments you have on problems with the proposals.
