FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT IN THE PARK SEPTEMBER 6

On Saturday September 6, I will be hosting a family movie night in the park. The movie “Horton Hears a Who” will be held outdoors at Walter Baker Park (near the toboggan hill - the site of Kanata's Canada Day) starting at dusk.

In case of rain, the Upper Hall of the Kanata Recreation Complex has been booked so that the movie can be shown inside. People will be able to get in starting at 6:30 p.m. and the start time will be 8:00 p.m., if it is raining.

It is a chance to get together with neighbours. People who provide some of the essential services that the City provides will be there from 6:30 p.m. on to let people see how they do their jobs.

Popcorn and drinks will be provided. Bring lawn chairs, your friends and families, and join my staff and I for an enjoyable evening.

NEXT COFFEE WITH PEGGY ON SEPTEMBER 5

The next Coffee with Peggy will be on Friday September 5 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon in the Food Court at Hazeldean Mall. Please don’t hesitate to stop by. I look forward to chatting with you informally about issues affecting our community.

BUS SERVICE IMPROVEMENTS MEAN HIGH FREQUENCY SERVICE FOR TERRY FOX PARK AND RIDE

On September 1, OC Transpo is making improvements to a number of services including the route 96 serving Kanata. What is being done is a further increase to the route 96 frequency in September (with 14 buses leaving the Terry Fox Transitway Station between 7:00 am and 8:00 am). This will make the existing Terry Fox Park and Ride more attractive for people living in the west part of Kanata, in Stittsville or in the rural area west of Kanata.

FALL CLEANING THE CAPITAL STARTS SEPTEMBER 15

This year Fall Cleaning the Capital will run from September 15 to October 15. Like Spring Cleaning the Capital, groups of people get together and clean-up public spaces. It can be classes, family, neighbour, hockey teams – the list goes on.

This Spring, in Kanata South alone, almost 1,500 people participated. Thanks are due to everyone who helped improve the appearance of our community.

To register or get more information you can go to ottawa.ca/clean or call 311. Groups registering before September 14 are eligible for prizes.

YOUR VIEWS SOUGHT ON RULES FOR GATEWAY FEATURES

In many new subdivisions, developers put up elaborate walls or signage at the entrance to help sell homes. While developers are still trying to sell homes, they pay the maintenance costs, but once the development is complete the costs become the responsibility of the City or homeowner (if the gateway feature is on private property).

Because of the costs to residents directly or through their taxes, I pushed for restrictions on gateway features. There are some cases where gateway features are a valued addition to the community. However, in many cases gateway features are not seen as necessary and the cost of repairing or taking them down is an unnecessary expense for the City or homeowners.

Consultations have been held and City staff want to be sure that their record of what was said reflects what people want. There will be an open house on Tuesday September 9 between 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. in room 340 at 255 Centrum Boulevard in Orléans. As getting to Orléans can be difficult, people can also get more information by contacting Mike Wildman at mike.wildman@ottawa.ca or 613-580-2424, ext. 27811.
