When the intersection modifications to install traffic lights at Kanata Avenue and Early Grey were delayed last Fall when it was realized that a geotechnical investigation would first be required, many people were disappointed. By the time the investigation and design work were complete there was not the time to tender the project and have the work complete by the end of the 2005 construction season.

What is planned for Earl Grey and Kanata Avenue is more than just installing traffic lights. Work includes widening Kanata Avenue to accommodate turning lanes, installing a new median, constructing new sidewalks, and upgrading street lighting.

Last year I asked staff to make sure it is possible to start work as soon as weather permits this spring. The contract was been tendered in December and a commence work order has now been issued.

The new timeline provided will see the work completed by June 2, 2006.

I am looking forward to the relief in traffic congestion and increased traffic safety that this intersection modification will bring to both motorists and pedestrians travelling through the Centrum area.
