the concerns of Kanata residents are registered.
After initially being told there would be
no consultation for residents in the west
end, the Ottawa Police Service have instead
agreed that asking residents in the west end
of the city to travel downtown to the police
consultation on February 25, meant that in
some cases, residents would not be able to
participate.
To deal with this inconvenience, and to ensure
safety issues that are important to Kanata
residents are heard, I have asked the police
to hold a separate information session for
residents in the West End of the city, and
the Police have agreed that holding a consultation
in Kanata will provide an opportunity for
more people to participate in the process.
In the 2006 city budget, funding for the
police was increased to allow more police
officers to be hired. This responds to a concern
I have heard from a large number of Kanata
residents about the need for more police.
With the 2006 increase, the total police
budget is $187 million. $178 million comes
from tax revenue. As a comparison, in 2003,
the police budget was $142 million of which
$135 million came from property tax revenues.
Over the last three years, the police budget
has increased by over $40 million.
The increase in funding for 2006 means more
officers on the street.
As part of the process, the Ottawa Police
Service is holding a consultation on its districts
and is looking for input on the proposed service
changes. Proposals are on the Ottawa Police
Service website at:
http://ottawapolice.ca/en/outreach/community_partnerships/pdf/2006_consultation_boundaries.pdf
If you have problems accessing the proposals,
please contact me and
I can e-mail or mail you a copy.
Please come out to the KRC at 100 Walter
Baker Place on Tuesday, March 21, between
7:00 – 9:00 pm to find out how changes
to the police patrol zones in the City will
affect police allocation in our neighbourhoods,
and to raise awareness with the police about
problems occurring in our community.
