Last week, the Ottawa Police Service released a ward profile of crime statistics for the 2005 – 2006 period. In Kanata South, the trend shows that crime has been on the decline.
Excluding traffic offences, the crime rate dropped by 4.3% between 2005 and 2006. Equally important, the number of crimes committed was below the five-year average, even though the population of Kanata South has grown.
Thanks to the efforts of the Ottawa Police Services, community groups like Neighbourhood Watch, and individual residents in the community, Ottawa reported the lowest violent crime rate (including offences such as homicide, assault, sexual assault and robbery) among the 28 largest urban areas in the country.
While violent crime remained unchanged in Kanata South and property crimes declined by 9.9% during the same period, there was a 98.1% increase in traffic offences in our community between 2005 and 2006. What had the greatest impact is the increase in the number of charges for failing to remain at the scene of an accident from 32 to 83.
An important part in proactive crime prevention is knowing what number to call to ensure the problem is addressed. The Ottawa Police Service also recently released “Making the Right Call” to let people know whether to call 9-1-1, the non-emergency police line, or By-law Services. “Making the Right Call” can be found by clicking here.
