HAVE YOUR SAY ON ALTERNATIVES FOR CHANGES TO RICHMOND ROAD TO REDUCE CONGESTION AT RICHMOND AND STONEHAVEN
City of Ottawa Traffic staff have come up with three options to reduce congestion for traffic from Stonehaven Drive turning left onto Richmond Road. All three options use the existing Richmond Road right-of-way so there is no need to obtain land from the National Capital Commission (NCC).
Below are the three options and the pros and cons for each. The cons column for two options includes, “Requires more environmental process which may delay the project.” The delay would likely be for at least a year.
Because residents are the ones with the most at stake, it is important your voice be heard. Please e-mail me at peggy.feltmate@ottawa.ca and I will forward your comments to Traffic staff.
Alternative 1- Intersection Improvements:
Existing auxiliary lanes at West Hunt Club (WHC) and Richmond, as well as at Stonehaven and Richmond are extended. A new auxiliary lane is proposed southbound on Richmond at WHC to facilitate a second left turn lane off WHC (shared left-right turn). The remainder of the corridor remains two lanes.
- 2.5m paved shoulders along the entire corridor will serve as bike lanes, with cycling pockets installed at the intersections.
- Lighting will be installed where improvements are implemented.
|
| Advantages |
Disadvantages |
- Can be designed and constructed relatively quickly
- Improves Level of Service at the intersection of Stonehaven Dr. /Richmond Rd. in morning and afternoon
- Improves Level of Service at the intersection of West Hunt Club Rd. /Richmond Rd. in morning and afternoon
|
- Does not provide an additional continuous lane
|
For Alternative 1, a diagram of the modifications at Richmond and Stonehaven can be found here and a diagram of the modifications at Richmond and West Hunt Club can be found here.
Alternative 2- Continuous Northbound Lane
This Alternative takes the extended auxiliary lanes on Richmond at Stonehaven and WHC and joins them to form a second northbound lane from Stonehaven to WHC, where it will exit as a right turn. This will create a 3-lane section through the corridor.
- 2.5m paved shoulders along the entire corridor will serve as bike lanes, with cycling pockets installed at the intersections.
- Lighting will be installed where improvements are implemented.
|
| Advantages |
Disadvantages |
- Northbound roadway capacity is increased between intersections; benefits for morning peak traffic
- Improves Level of Service at the intersection of Stonehaven Dr. /Richmond Rd. in morning and afternoon Requires more environmental process which may delay the project
- Improves Level of Service at the intersection of West Hunt Club Rd. /Richmond Rd. in morning and afternoon Requires more widening at Stony Swamp
|
- Requires illumination through the NCC corridor
|
For Alternative 2, a diagram of the modifications at Richmond and Stonehaven can be found here and a diagram of the modifications at Richmond and West Hunt Club can be found here.
Alternative 3- Reversible Lane
This Alternative uses a 3-lane section, however rather than 2 northbound lanes, and 1 southbound lane, the centre lane is converted into a reversible lane, where it operates northbound during the AM peak, and southbound during the PM peak.
- 2.5m paved shoulders along the entire corridor will serve as bike lanes, with cycling pockets installed at the intersections.
- Lighting will be installed where improvements are implemented.
|
| Advantages |
Disadvantages |
- Roadway Capacity is increased - benefits morning and afternoon peak traffic
- Improves Level of Service at the intersection of Stonehaven Dr. /Richmond Rd. in morning and afternoon
- Improves Level of Service at the intersection of West Hunt Club Rd. /Richmond Rd. in morning and afternoon
|
- Requires illumination and overhead signs through the NCC corridor
- Requires more environmental process which may delay the project
- Creates an unusual driving situation
- Requires more widening at Stony Swamp
