Day 2 – Sunday, March 12
Departure from Winchester, Virginia, bright
and early at 9:00 am. Spring officially started
at 11:00 with the first Forsythia bush in
bloom - followed shortly by Bradford Pears
- beautiful white blossoms. In amongst the
rolling hills of Virginia and Tennessee, we
came across the first clue that we were in
“Nashville country” as we stopped
for a photo op near a super-sized version
of a guitar.
Arrived at LaFolette at 5:00 pm and met our
host, Keith, who took along a winding road
to Indian River Marina.
After a quick settling in, we all donned
our black T-shirts (KUC and WUC - Building
Community) and proceeded to the LaFollette
United Methodist Church, where pizza and sweets
were served.
We all had a chance to meet Melinda and Kelly
Lambert, the owners of the new house. The
youth group from the Church led a short service
of singing and conversation.
A short meeting followed to assign jobs for
tomorrow, starting with siding and painting
at the Habitat for Humanity site (15 folks),
painting at REACH, a local Rural Public Health
facility, teaching about Canada at a local
school, and odd jobs at the Historical Society.
Everyone will be gainfully employed for the
day.
Tomorrow night we will be invited to take
a quick tour of part of Norris Lake, one of
the first water reservoirs formed in this
area being 75 miles long and 6 miles wide,
so we will only be seeing a small part of
it.
