ANNOUNCEMENT THAT I WILL BE RETIRING NEXT ELECTION

On February 5th, I announced that I will not be running for re-election as councillor. Between being councillor and executive director of the Western Ottawa Community Resource Centre, I have been working for Kanata for 22 years. With the birth of my grandson last June, I decided that, when my term on council expires, working for the community needs to become a part-time, volunteer activity.

The complete text of the media release I sent out can be found here.

The report on phases one and two of the flood investigation along with preliminary estimates for the cost of work required to deal with the problems has been released. It is estimated that it will cost $20 million over the next three years to fix the problems that led to flooding on July 24, 2009.

OMB DECISION ON 310 STONEHAVEN RAISES QUESTIONS ABOUT DEVELOPMENT APPROVAL PROCESS

The Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) ruling in September upheld the City Council decision not to allow development at 310 Stonehaven until traffic problems at Stonehaven and Richmond are resolved. This was good news, but the fact the issue was even at the OMB should worry people. The challenges the City faced show why changes are needed to the development process.

TAX INCREASE NEEDS TO BE REDUCED, BUT SOME PROPOSALS DON’T ADD UP

Going into the Audit, Budget and Finance Committee, everyone agreed that measures had to be taken to reduce the proposed tax increase. An 8.7% tax increase is not realistic.

What was debated were measures that either don’t add up or will end up increasing costs to the City.

KANATA FOOD CUPBOARD NEEDS OUR HELP

Because of increased demand, the Kanata Food Cupboard is giving out more food than it is taking in. Over the last three months, the number of families the Food Cupboard helps has increased by one third. Our community has a history of coming together to make sure the Food Cupboard can meet the needs of the most vulnerable Kanata residents. More information on how to help can be found here.

PRESENTATIONS FROM THE SEPTEMBER 12 MEETINGS ON FLOODING IN KANATA

At the public meetings on the July 24 flooding City of Ottawa staff made presentations based on what the investigation has found so far. The presentations are for:

Public Meetings on investigation into flooding

To give people a chance to get information on the investigation and to provide feedback I am having public meetings on the investigation into the flooding. These meetings are also intended to ensure there is as much scrutiny as possible of the investigation. We want to make sure the investigation looks at all possible causes.

Because the causes of the flooding differ from area to area, there will be separate meetings for the south part of Glen Cairn, north part of Glen Cairn and Bridlewood and Katimavik - Hazeldean.

Presentation to September 2, 2009 Council meeting on preliminary results of investigation

The presentation on the preliminary results of the investigation that was made to Council on September 2 can be found here. Residents need a lot more information than the presentation provides. As a next step, I will be holding public meetings for people to get more detailed information, ask questions and make comments. As soon as details are finalized, I will be sending them out.

Petition to protect Nortel pensions

Problems with Canadian bankruptcy legislation mean that many former Nortel employees could lose their pensions. For people who planned carefully for their retirement based on the pensions they earned, it is potentially devastating. A petition calling for changes in the legislation to protect employee pensions can be found here.

Kanata Food Cupboard needs your help

With the recession and recent flooding in Kanata the need for help from the Food Cupboard is up. Unfortunately, the recession means that many people do not have the ability to donate that they once did. Other regular donors are away. This means the Kanata Food Cupboard needs your help.

Donations of food can be made at participating grocery stores. Cheques can be sent to the Kanata Food Cupboard at:

20 Young Rd.,
Kanata, ON, K2L 1W1

If you would like to donate by Visa you can call 613-836-7847, Line 1.

As well, on Saturday August 29 there will be an OC Transpo bus at Laura's Independent Grocer collecting donations for the Food Cupboard. The Food Cupboard needs your help to fill the bus.
